We understand that AI is a controversial topic, so you may be skeptical of our brand or our stance on generative AI tools as they related to authors and publishers, which is totally fair!

1. We support tools that make it cheaper and easier for authors to publish.
2. Not all work needs to be creative. While authors have make personal choices about which tools to use and what processes they are OK with outsourcing, there are many difficult, boring tasks that aren’t essential to creating great literature.
3. Most editors and authors use Grammarly or ProwritingAid to check for typos. Maybe machines can’t do the big picture heavy development editing we’re famous for… but they are pretty good at catching mistakes or typos – and while we’re 99% accurate on our own, we use editing tools to make sure we catch everything.
4. If you want us to edit from scratch, with no extra spellcheck tools at all; let us know and we can do that. Just be aware editors never catch everything. So you can hire two for twice the cost, or allow a spellcheck feature which has already been common use for two decades.

5. Regarding the images on this site, yes we use Midjourney. If you scroll back far enough on our blog, you’ll see some very boring and basic stock photos which were the best we could find at the time, but they never quite fit our brand; pictures like the ones we use here don’t exist anywhere else, so we had to make them. We feel that mood and branding is critical to communicate the BookButchers experience. We also think there’s a difference between making things freely available, versus trying to sell them, versus claiming they are products of our own imagination and creativity.

The Legal and Moral Complications of Gen AI in Publishing

This is a much larger topic, but here are some things you should know:
1. Amazon and most big publishers (including traditional publishers) are quickly moving to free, instant voice narration for audiobooks.
2. AI book covers are popular on Kindle, including trad published books. All things aside, authors want to use the art that sells more copies, because the cover is packaging.
3. AI tools can be really helpful for authors and offer an alternative to expensive services; they can be used as supplementary, rather than primary – AI can help you finish a book rather than write the book for you.
4. It is unlikely the case against AI will have any direct, real-world resolution; so while you can absolutely choose not to use it, your ethical stance won’t dictate other people’s behavior.
